Charity welcomes the District Council’s plans for weekly household food waste collections by 2026
Households generate 60% of all food that is wasted in the UK each year: this amounts to 6.4 million tonnes, the equivalent of 18 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. UKHarvest is on a mission to prevent food waste and end this environmental catastrophe.
On 19th March 2024, Chichester District Council voted to start the process of implementing weekly household food waste collections by 2026. In response to this decision, Yvonne Thomson, CEO of UKHarvest, stated "This is a positive step that will help Chichester residents to divert food from landfill and protect their local environment. While UKHarvest looks ahead to the first collections in 2026, we encourage residents to take action today to prevent avoidable food waste at home."
The UKHarvest website is home to the popular NourishEd platform, offering tips and advice for reducing food waste and cooking on a budget. One tip: stop peeling vegetables and keep their nutritious, fibre-rich skins on as this is good for your gut and prevents unnecessary waste! For more tips, please visit www.ukharvest.org.uk/nourished.
