Swap, Borrow and Cook
‘Swap, Borrow and Cook’ with UKHarvest and Hampshire Waste Prevention
The cost-of-living crisis continues to impact many communities in the UK. With the rise of food prices and concerns about food insecurity and poverty affecting many demographics from families and individuals through to the unemployed and vulnerable, UKHarvest continues to connect with local authorities and charities to ensure support and education to all.
With support from the Hampshire County Council Waste Prevention Community Grant Fund, a new and exciting project is being piloted at Park Community School’s MUNCH Pantry this September called ‘Swap, Borrow and Cook’. Located in Leigh Park, Havant, the project aims to support households to reduce food waste and save money. UKHarvest have provided 5 slow cookers to be loaned out through Munch Pantry for the small cost of £1 a week.
Using a slow cooker is a cost-effective way to cook, enabling households to batch-cook meals using less energy than other cooking methods. Using a slow cooker for the first time can be daunting. However, this project allows Munch pantry customers to trial a slow cooker for a week and access free resources and easy slow cooker recipes on UKHarvest's website. This can help to widen knowledge, build confidence and help people to reduce their food waste, and ultimately save them money.
In addition, Munch pantry will provide a FREE SWAP SHOP facility for customers to bring in any un-wanted, un-broken and non-electrical kitchen utensils and then swap for something more useful. For example; A forgotten, un-used egg whisk lurking at the back of the cupboard could be bought into the pantry and swapped for a cake tin or the like. Great for re-using items and preventing plastic waste.
